How I found
my way

The Beginning

My interest in design actually started long before computers did.

One of my favorite things as a kid was drawing faces. I'd sketch portraits and spend hours on the details. In primary school I got the chance to meet the painter İsmet Çetin, and a big part of my childhood was spent in his studio. I painted with oils and learned that art isn't just the finished piece. It's also the process of making it.

Back then I had no idea this would turn into a career. I just loved creating things.

Discovering the Digital World

I got my first real hands-on experience with computers in high school.

Digital design wasn't as accessible back then as it is now, but that's when I first realized design doesn't only exist on paper, on canvas, or in the physical world. Screens are designed too, and digital worlds are made too.

In university I discovered Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. These tools opened a new door for me. I did print design work, took on freelance projects, produced digital illustrations, and started exploring different disciplines.

Around the same time, I got the chance to work with Refik Anadol and Haluk Akakçe. Seeing up close how art, technology, and experience design relate to each other changed my perspective significantly.

From Design to Experience

While at university, a professor of mine got me involved in a project centered on user experience and marketing-driven work.

For the first time, I saw that design isn't just about making aesthetic decisions. Understanding human behavior, analyzing needs, and solving real problems was the most exciting part of design.

I did my graduation project in collaboration with ITU and Mudo. I researched the habits of generations X and Y and developed experience and collection proposals aimed at that audience. That's when I got much closer to research, generating insights, and backing design decisions with data.

That's the point where I decided which direction I wanted to take my career.

Product Design.

Products, People, and Business Goals

In the early years of my career I designed interfaces with heavy human-machine interaction. Over time I got the chance to work on mobile apps, web platforms, and digital products at different scales.

But over time I realized something:

A good product designer doesn't just design screens.

They also try to understand why the product is used, where users struggle, which metrics are tracked, and what the business goals actually are.

That's why throughout my career I've cared not just about design systems, user flows, and interfaces, but also about analysis, reporting, optimization, and product development processes.

Today

Today I work as a Product Designer at a media company.

I sit at the intersection of content, product, growth, and user experience. Sometimes I'm designing new features, sometimes improving existing experiences, and sometimes trying to understand the story the data is telling.

Looking back, not much has actually changed.

The kid who spent hours in front of a canvas and the person designing digital products today are fed by the same curiosity:

Understanding how people think, making complex things easier to understand, and creating something people would actually want to use.
